Wellbeing in the Workplace: Why Looking After Your People Changes Everything
Over the years, I've watched something shift. People aren't just tired they're overwhelmed in a way that goes deeper than a bad week or a busy season. It shows up in small moments: someone sitting in my chair unable to choose a nail varnish colour. A client who can't tell me which treatment they'd like, even though they booked it themselves. People who circle a car park for ten minutes, paralysed by which space to take.
This isn't indecision. It's decision fatigue and it's real.
The Science Behind the Overwhelm
We only have so much decision making capacity in a day. Every choice what to wear, what to eat, how to respond to that email, which task to tackle first draws from the same finite well. By the time many people reach the end of their working day, that well is dry. And when it runs out at work, it doesn't stay at work. It follows people home, into their relationships, their evenings, their sleep. When a parent or partner is running on empty, the whole household feels it.
I see the physical toll of this too burnout doesn't just live in the mind. It shows up in the body, in exhaustion that a weekend can't fix.
Why This Is a Business Problem, Not Just a Personal One
Burnt out staff aren't operating at capacity. Decision fatigue slows people down, dulls creativity, and erodes the resilience a team needs to perform well. The businesses that thrive are the ones that understand a simple truth: investing in your people's wellbeing isn't a soft perk it's a direct line to productivity.
There's a reason companies like Marks & Spencer and Boots once had in house hairdressing and beauty salons for staff. It wasn't indulgence it was strategy. When people feel good, they show up differently. A fresh haircut, a new outfit, a moment of genuine care these aren't superficial. They speak directly to the nervous system, and a regulated nervous system is what allows someone to think clearly, make decisions with ease, and lead from a place of calm rather than survival.
What This Looks Like in Practice
Bringing wellbeing into the workplace means giving people back some of what daily life takes from them space to switch off, to be looked after, to reset. Whether that's a rolling programme of sound healing sessions throughout the day, hands-on treatments like massage and Reiki, or a full wellness event woven into your working week, the goal is the same: to help your people arrive at the end of the day with something left in the tank.
Because when your team can prioritise what matters, think clearly, and make decisions without depleting themselves, everyone benefits the business, the individual, and everyone waiting for them at home.
If you're ready to invest in your team's wellbeing, let's talk about what that could look like for your workplace.
Deep Roots, Strong Foundations
From the smallest acorn, a mighty oak grows.
It doesn't happen overnight. Beneath the surface, long before you ever see a branch reach skyward, the oak is doing something quieter and far more important it's sending its roots down. Deep. Wide. Strong. Anchoring itself into the ground so firmly that no storm, no drought, no passing season can shake it loose.
That's what strong foundations do. They hold you steady, so that whatever comes pressure, change, a difficult day, a difficult year you're rooted enough to face it.
But an oak tree doesn't stand alone. Beneath the ground, its roots are connected to a whole network of other trees, quietly passing nutrients, water, and energy back and forth. When one tree is running low, the others feed it. They support each other, unseen, so that the whole woodland stays strong not just the individual.
This is exactly the spirit I want to bring into the corporate wellbeing space.
A workplace is no different to a woodland. Every person is a tree with their own roots to strengthen and a team is only as resilient as the network beneath it. When we invest in people's foundations their sense of calm, their capacity to rest, their ability to reconnect with themselves we're not just helping the individual. We're strengthening the whole system they belong to.
Because when your roots run deep, you don't just survive what comes your way. You grow through it.
When the Nervous System Never Switches Off, the Body Pays the Price
Burnout doesn't just make people tired. It makes people ill.
When we're under constant pressure deadlines, decisions, always-on culture the nervous system stays locked in fight-or-flight. It's designed to do this in short bursts, for real emergencies. What it isn't designed for is staying switched on day after day, month after month.
And when it does, the body starts to pay for it. Chronic stress keeps the stress-response system in overdrive, and this has a direct line to the immune system the very system responsible for fighting off illness before it takes hold. Research consistently shows that prolonged stress and burnout weaken immune function, leaving the body less able to defend itself. It isn't a coincidence that the people running hardest, for the longest, are so often the ones who end up unwell.
A settled nervous system works the other way. When the body is given the chance to properly rest not just physically, but at a nervous-system level it can come out of survival mode and back into balance. That's when the immune system can do what it's meant to do, quietly, in the background, without a body that's already fighting a different battle.
This is why nervous system regulation belongs in the workplace wellbeing conversation, not just the healthcare one.
When we help people down-regulate through rest, touch, sound, breathwork, or simply permission to pause we're not offering a luxury. We're giving the body the conditions it needs to stay well in the first place. A calm nervous system doesn't just feel better. It gives illness less of a chance to take hold at all.
I Am Living Proof of This
I don't say any of this from the outside looking in. For years, I put everyone else first — fixing everybody around me before I ever thought to fix myself. I masked it. I was the classic people-pleaser, always saying "I'm okay, I'm fine, all is good" while actually hiding just how bone tired, ill, stressed, and overwhelmed I really was. It wasn't until much later that I realised I had ADHD, and after years of continued stress, fibromyalgia appeared. There came a point where I simply couldn't keep going that way any longer and that was the moment it became time for me. That's how I found the holistic tools that have helped me manage my symptoms ever since.
This comes from a place of good intentions, because I know exactly how it feels to be that person and I've paid the price for it. I am walking evidence of how burnout, left unchecked, can turn into long-term illness and of how much of a difference it makes when you finally give your nervous system what it needs to recover.
